“The first time I ever came to Washington, DC was in 1999 with a youth group from Presbytery of the Northern Plains (which covers North Dakota and a bit of Western Minnesota). During that trip, we stayed at the WSC. We did the usual mix of sight-seeing and service projects with great time for reflection and community in the WSC space.
Now 13 years later I am a summer fellow with the PC(USA)’s Office of Public Witness, and I had the opportunity to speak about our Office’s economic justice work earlier this month at our event at the WSC. It was so fun to think about my first time in the Center, and how opportunities for service like that one led me down the path to the social justice work I’m engaged in now. I am a candidate for ordination, and the first chair of my Committee on Preparation for Ministry was one of our trip leaders to DC in 1999. These links are so powerful and symbolize the connections and spiritual paths that are possible through the church in its many forms of ministry.
So let me close by saying a huge thank you for the ministry of the Seminar Center. Thirteen years ago it helped open my eyes to national poverty and justice issues. You never know how the WSC will help shape the lives of those who pass through your doors!”
